Gers

Čas tu plyne jinak
později se slunce vydá spát

polední žár zteplá sklenku vína
nad poli krouží orli hladoví

Meet ... Poet Karel Hynek (Ignác) Mácha

Karel Hynek Mácha (1810 - 1836) od Jana Vilímka

Karel Hynek Mácha
(*16. 11. 1810 - †6. 11. 1836)

Czech poet Karel Hynek (Ignác) Mácha was born on 16 November, 1810 in Prague, in the White Eagle House, into the family of the foreman of the mill Antonín Mácha (1769 - 1843) and Marie Anny Kirchnerová (1781 - 1840), with musical background. Later he changed his baptismal name Ignác to Czech Hynek. Because of state financial bankruptcy in 1811, following Hynek's birth, his family moved to slum in the neighbourhood of St. Peter's Church, where Mácha spend his childhood and adolescence.

Basic education gained at the Crusaders parish school of St. Peter on Poříčí (1821 - 1824) and at Piarists gymnasium (1824 - 1830). He studied at the Philosophical (1830 - 1832) and Law (1832 - 1836) faculty of the Charles University.

Although he wrote his first poems in German, since his studies at the Philosophical faculty, where he attended lectures of Josef Jungmann, he kept using the Czech language. Mácha participated in many social activities, as an actor he became involved in the Estates' Theatre and the Kajetán Theatre. He cooperated with Josef Kajetán Tyl. While studying at the Law faculty he met Eleonora Šomková (1817 – 1891).

In 1834 Karel Hynek Mácha went on journey, via Austria and Alps, to Italy, describing his travel in his diary "Deník na cestě do Itálie". In 1974, the leading Czech literary theorist and scientist Růžena Grebeníčková went on the same journey followed his footsteps mentioned in his diary (see "Máchovské studie").

In April 1836 he published his "Máj". In the end of September he took up a legal post in Litoměřice at the office of "justiciár" Josef Duras and his son Ludvík was born 1st October. He suddenly died on 6 November 1836 in Litomeřice. Probably as a result of self sacrificing fire suppression, while he gulped contaminated water. His funeral was held at the same day as planned wedding day with Eleonora Šomková, on 8 November 1836. His son Ludvík died 5th July 1837.

1912 Mácha's statue by Josef Václav Myslbek was erected on Petřín in Prague. 1st October 1938 Mácha's remains were exhumed, and transported to Prague, to the Vyšehrad cemetery, where he was buried 7th May 1939, for the second time.
